Over the past several years I have been investigating how children compose language when they:
- read a picture book they’ve made
- read a an unfamiliar picture book in which they are using the pictures, rather than decoding
- composing language in other areas such as dramatic play, small world play, oral story telling, story workshop, etc.
When we can notice and name how children are composing language in one area, we can use that knowledge to impact how they support language in another area.
To further investigate this topic, Kathy Collins and I are launching Language Composition Inquiry Groups. Each cohort will be kept to 20-25 people, small enough to fit on one Zoom screen. There will be cohorts for different time zones.
There will be six Zoom sessions during this year long inquiry. During each session we will choose different language areas to focus on. As we progress not the year participants
Participants will work with a draft of a Language Composition Framework to use with their students and share their experiences with the group.
This is not a typical webinar series. This is an opportunity for us to engage in conversation, investigate together and share our thinking.
